“This Is a Wake-Up Call to the FCC” – As Public Comment Period Closes, a Broad, Bipartisan Coalition Stands United Against Google-Backed Set-Top Mandate

As the initial comment period on the FCC’s proposed set-top box mandate closed on Friday, opposition to the Google-led proposal flooded in from all corners of the business community and ideological spectrum. The Future of TV Coalition offered the following statement on the growing chorus of opposition to the Commission’s proposed mandate:

“This overwhelming outcry of opposition should be a wake-up call to the FCC. Criticism of this unnecessary, harmful, half-baked proposal isn’t just coming from one industry – it’s coming from an incredibly broad coalition of creators, artists, businesses, non-profit organizations, lawmakers and more than 70,000 concerned citizens.

“The case against this unnecessary, harmful mandate has never been more clear. The marketplace for video devices and services is dynamic and competitive, and this market is already delivering consumers new options and alternatives that allow viewers to ditch their set-top box once and for all. There’s simply no excuse for the FCC to disrupt this innovative, creative marketplace just to put a thumb on the scale for Google. We’re grateful to the tens of thousands of stakeholders and citizens who’ve made their voices heard in this debate.”
