Future of TV Coalition reacts to Chairman Wheeler’s remarks at House Appropriations Committee Hearing

The Future of TV Coalition issued the following statement following FCC Chairman Tom Wheeler’s appearance today at the House Appropriations Committee’s FCC budget hearing before the Financial Services and General Government Subcommittee:

“It’s disappointing and troubling that Chairman Wheeler continues to dodge basic questions about his set-top box proposal. Congressman Quigley asked him whether the FCC has authority to impose Communications Act privacy rules on equipment manufacturers. Congressman Bishop asked him – twice – whether the FCC has commissioned any internal or external studies to project the economic impact of the proposal on minority programmers.

“The Chairman’s refusal to provide simple ‘yes’ or ‘no’ answers to these basic questions is alarming. Dozens of programmers, content creators, lawmakers, and community leaders have spoken clearly about the devastating impact this rule will have on the programming marketplace, and particularly on the independent networks serving communities of color. They deserve honest answers – not dismissals and dodges.”
